Mati Fernandez is a retired Chilean professional footballer who played primarily as an attacking midfielder or winger. He was born on 15 May 1986 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but he represented the Chilean national team throughout his career.
Fernandez began his professional career with Colo-Colo in Chile before moving to Spanish side Villarreal in 2006. He also played for Sporting CP in Portugal, Fiorentina and AC Milan in Italy, and Necaxa in Mexico before returning to Colo-Colo in 2019 to end his career.
Fernandez was known for his technical ability, vision, and creativity on the ball. He won several titles during his career, including the Chilean Primera Division, the Portuguese Cup, and the Italian Super Cup. He also represented the Chilean national team and played in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
After retiring from football in 2021, Fernandez has started coaching. He is currently the assistant coach at Deportes La Serena in the Chilean Primera Division.
